Recording artist Leigh Jones to entertain troops at Fort Belvoir

Leigh Jones will be performing at Blues Alley in Washington.May 5 shows at 8 p.m. and 10 p.m.

click for full story by Tim Hipps (Family and MWR Command)

Story Highlights

  • "It's absolutely incredible just to give back anything - a little bit of entertainment, a little bit of fun ..."
    Leigh Jones

ALEXANDRIA, Va. - Los Angeles-based singer/songwriter Leigh Jones will entertain and visit with members of Warrior Transition Units and Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers May 6 at the Fort Belvoir Community Center.

The Army Entertainment Division-backed meet and greet for photographs and autographs is set for 9:15-10:15 a.m., followed by Jones' performance.

"I'll stay there for as long as they want," she said. "That's something that's fun for me to do. We'll just have fun."

She will meet with local military commanders at 11 a.m., followed by another meet and greet open to all Soldiers at the Fort Belvoir dining facility from 11:45 a.m. until 12:45 p.m.

"I'm excited," Jones said. "It's absolutely incredible just to give back anything - a little bit of entertainment, a little bit of fun, just something to help these guys out. They've done such an incredible job fighting for our country, so this is really, really exciting."

Jones will be in town for May 5 shows at 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. at Blues Alley in Washington. Having previously performed with Stevie Wonder, Brian McKnight, John Legend and Eric Benet, she will be accompanied on this solo tour by her manager, Kerry Gordy, son of Motown Records founder Berry Gordy.

A third D.C. performance has been added May 6 at 8 p.m. at Station 9, in conjunction with WHUR, Howard University's radio station. Military personnel with a valid identification card will be admitted to that $25 show for $10, said Rob Meeko, marketing director for Kerry Gordy Enterprises.

"Music in My Soul," featuring the single "Free Fall," is the debut album for Jones, whose jazz and R&B flair create a distinct retro sound that is sultry, sexy and insightful. Her wide-ranging musical influences range from Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday and Marvin Gaye to D'Angelo, Jill Scott and Joss Stone.

Born and raised in North Hollywood, Jones was introduced to music at a very early age.

"My grandpa used to play in a military band when he was younger," Jones said. "He played the trumpet. I come from a family of entertainers, and we love to support.

"My dad taught voice lessons, as well as being a studio singer singing backup for Frank Sinatra and Natalie Cole, among many others. My mother told me I would hum along with the scales, which I could hear in the next room, and would sing myself to sleep. This was all before I was able to talk."

Years later, Jones became known as "the little white girl with the big soulful voice" and enrolled in Los Angeles County High School for the Arts.

Jones won over Gordy, a former executive producer for Motown, Paisley Park and Warner Bros. Records, at first sight.

"In my initial meeting with Leigh, she was so cool, intelligent, attractive and talented, that I felt excited and privileged to have the opportunity to be involved with someone I believed could make a significant impact in the music industry," Kerry Gordy said. "Her qualifications have far surpassed my expectations."

Berry Gordy seconded that sentiment.

"Throughout my career I have been blessed to discover many great musical talents," he said. "I feel Leigh Jones is destined to be one of the next great stars. She can do it all - pop, R&B, jazz and blues. She's awesome."

Smooth jazz giant Wayman Tisdale collaborated with Jones to put a contemporary spin on the DeBarge classic "All This Love." Songwriting legend Bruce Fisher, composer of "You Are So Beautiful," worked with Jones on nearly half the songs on her debut album.

Getting Jones to more installations to entertain Soldiers is in the discussion stage, along with talks about the possibility of a New Year's Eve appearance in Japan.

"I heard Kerry mention something about that," Jones said. "I'm totally up for it. I love the thought of all this. I just can't wait. I'm so excited."

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE    Put away your Pills!  “Energy Psychology Self-Healing Practices for Bodymind Health” by Dr. Michael Mayer, leader in the integral health movement, ushers in next paradigm in self-healing. Now everyone can tap into his tried and proven self-healing methods!  This new book is available today, Tuesday, April 28, 2009.

Berkeley, CA Tuesday 4/28/09 “Energy Psychology”  by Dr. Michael Mayer (North Atlantic Books/Random House, $19.95)  Finally! A documented self-healing method that really works! His book, “Energy Psychology” shows how everyone can tap into tried and proven self-healing techniques!

Our culture is experiencing an internal energy crisis. Stressed out battle fatigued soldiers of the information age are reaching for extra cups of coffee to restore depleted internal reserves. A Yale University study stated that nurses indicated that energy levels had the highest correlation with general health status. Readers of Dr Mayer’s book will learn leading-edge bodymind healing methods to relax and increase their energies naturally. Many Americans today are run down, tired, and suffering from chronic pain, hypertension, insomnia and anxiety. Our culture conditions us to reach for medications at the first sign of an illness, which unfortunately often leads us to experience drowsiness and many terrible side-effects. Dr. Mayer wrote “Energy Psychology” to bring the knowledge of self-healing powers to the people.

Dr. Michael Mayer pioneered the integration of Qigong and psychotherapy and is co-founder of an integrated medical clinic in Walnut Creek, California. He and his colleagues developed a way to teach patients to tap into their own self-healing powers using Eastern/Western health and psychology traditions. For thirty years, Dr. Mayer has used cross-cultural ancient traditions from China, India, and the Kabbalah. “Energy Psychology” combines these traditions with current methods in psychology, meditation, acu-point self touch, and martial arts. He has thirty years of training with some of the most respected Tai Chi/Qigong masters. Dr. Mayer draws on all of these sources in his book, “Energy Psychology.”

“Dr. Mayer has provided a seminal contribution to the field of mind-body interventions for a wide range of common disorders, as he offers us a treasure house of energy-based practices to cultivate our self-healing powers. His book is profound in its scope, evidence based, bridges Eastern and Western traditions, and provides practical insights and skills that can be of enormous value to both individuals and organizations seeking to attain optimal health He combined and integrated all his vast experience to write this.”

Dr. Kenneth R. Pelletier,
Clinical Professor of Medicine, UCSF and University of Arizona School of Medicine
Author of “The Best Alternative Medicine: What Works? What Does Not?"

Kennedy University; he taught the first doctoral psychology courses in the integration of Qigong and Western mind-body healing methods at the California Institute of Integral Studies, San Francisco. Subject: Fwd: Secretary of the Arts Petition

-
Let's all support Quncy Jones's effort to put the Arts back on to the national agenda.

Producer Quincy Jones has started a petition to try and influence President-Elect Obama to appoint a Secretary of the Arts (or other Arts "czar").  This certainly seems like a good idea, given the short shrift that the arts generally get, including continual cuts in the budgets of the NEA and other arts-related agencies, as well as arts in the schools, which are the first thing to be cut when budgets suffer.  Many other countries have Ministers of Art and/or Culture, some have had them for decades.  The U.S. has never had such a position, despite our enormous contribution to the arts.

Please take a moment to sign the petition.  Note that there is a option for signing which would keep your email address fully secure.

The first link is the petition.  The second is to an article in the LA Times that explains how this whole thing came about.

Peace.

Stanley Jordan performs at Yoshi's
Monday July 7, Tuesday July 8th and Wednesday July 9th

Stanley Jordan shares the magical music of his latest CD "State of Nature" at Yoshi's in Oakland this week.

Stanley Jordan, world renowned musician and now holistic philosopher, has released a new CD "State of Nature". It is a true gift. "State of Nature" promises to become a hit. It combines Jordan's magical ability to compose music that inspires and refreshes with his amazing musical skill. When listening to the album you are taken on a magical journey that is both uplifting and enlightening. Stanley brings nature to life and urges us to embrace it while at the same time enjoying our humanity as part of nature.

The CD starts with "A Place in Space" which is fun to listen to. It evokes a feeling of bouncing harmoniously in space among many other stars and planets. This composition is melodic and modern. It immediately demonstrates Jordan's ability to play guitar in a way that hardly anyone else can match. The notes are bouncing, echoing, flowing, and they create a feeling of richness and fullness that reminds us that we are part of a very big mysterious world. Jordan asks us with his commentary in the liner notes to become conscious and aware of this vast and mysterious Universe. He suggests that as we become aware of the infinite vastness of space we will naturally grow to love and care for our precious planet, our home called Earth.

The CD is quickly rising to the top of the charts in many states and countries around the world. Give yourself a treat and go down to Yoshi's Oakland to enjoy the show. www.yoshis.com

Martin Fierro Tribute
Cafe Du Nord on Tuesday, May 6, 2008

For Immediate Release 4/19/2008 MItch Stein and the All Star Band will perform at Cafe du Nord, May 6, 2008

Mitch Stein writes: Greetings, all. It is with a heavy heart that I must inform those of you who've not yet heard that the one and only Martin Fierro recently left his physical being behind in order to pursue "That Great Jam Session In The Sky."

Meester was an integral member of the All-Star Band for nearly 20 years, but more than that, he was my brother. Those of you who were fortunate enough to see Martin perform know how special he truly was, and we would like to pay tribute to him in grand style.

The All-Star Band requests your attendance at a show in tribute to Martin on Tuesday, May 6 at Cafe Du Nord in San Francisco. We will celebrate our time with Martin through live music, recollections, and probably some really bad jokes from his repertoire. We'll have a silent auction of memorabilia and other fun items (possibly some LARGE ones), and proceeds from the entire evening (including ticket sales) will benefit his beautiful 8-year-old daughter Jessica.

We hope you can make it!

Cheers,
Mitch & The All-Star Band

He performed with the Eugene Ormandy and the Philadelphia Philharmonic, Fisk University Choir and the famed Jubilee Singers, they performed Porgy and Bess with the Nashville Symphony where Noah had a solo. As a soloist Noah Griffin performed with Duke Ellington, Shirelles, Kings and he performed in Carmen, Boris Gudenov, Turandot and soloing in La Boheme with the San Francisco Cosmopolitan Opera Company. Noah Griffin was chosen to solo with Duke Ellington in his Boston debut of his "Sacred Concert". Call to Action: Crisis in Kenya

Special Announcement

February, 2008

002

Dear Friends,

Our nonprofit organization – Trestle Group Foundation – has been actively supporting the Kenya-based African Centre for Women, Information and Communications Technology (ACWICT) since May of 2007. The mission of this pioneering organization is to promote women's access to and use of ICTs as tools for social, economic and political advancement.

Kenya is considered to be one of Africa’s the most stable democratic countries and a positive influence in the region. One of the most vibrant economies in East Africa, its capital Nairobi also serves as the main financial, transportation and communications hub for the region.

Because of a disputed presidential election in late December, Kenya now stands at a critical moment in its history. Post-election violence and civil unrest has erupted and the fallout poses a serious threat to Kenya’s society and economy. According to Red Cross, the death toll from weeks of violence has surpassed 1,000 people, and an additional 300,000 people have been displaced. Business leaders have warned of a severe economic downturn and estimate that hundreds of thousands of jobs and billions of dollars in business will be lost over the next six months – even if the crisis is resolved immediately.

In response to the post-election crisis, ACWICT has been identified as a key partner in the “Heal the Nation” campaign – a peace building initiative developed by a consortium of humanitarian NGOs in Kenya. Working alongside the mainstream media, as well as media-focused NGOs, ACWICT will play a key role in generating and disseminating peace messages in an effort to heal the rifts caused by post-election violence in Kenya.

As a friend and supporter of Trestle Group and Trestle Group Foundation, I am personally asking you to consider supporting this pioneering organization and this critical campaign. They need your help!

As communicated in a recent letter from ACWICT Executive Director Constantine Obuya, “Women are our focus and they have borne the greatest brunt in the violence. As is common in any situation of conflict, men succumb to injuries leaving women as heads of households. Any support – financial or in-kind – would greatly help our efforts to reach out to these women and give them hope.”

How to support ACWICT’s efforts and the “Heal the Nation” Campaign:

• Financial Support – Contact ACWICT directly for information on how to contribute to the Heal the Nation Account.

• In-Kind Contributions – Immediate support including humanitarian aid (food, tents/shelter, clothing, bedding, mosquito nets, etc.), assistance relocating the displaced to their ancestral homes, and ACWICT's logistical costs.

• ACWICT Centers – To restore ACWICT's regional centers vandalized during the unrest, computers, software and accessories are needed.

Please consider how you can support ACWICT and their important efforts to heal a nation and its people, as well as help reconstruct Kenya – a vital country and economy. Additional information is contained below. You can learn more about ACWICT through our recent film: http://www.trestlegroupfoundation.org/videos.php .

Thank you in advance for your thoughtful consideration and support.

Sincerely.

Ralph Schonenbach
CEO Trestle Group

The UC Jazz Club wishes to thank all its members and the community at large for your continued support. " "An Evening at Yoshi's "

On November 12, 2007 the UC Jazz Ensembles performed their First Annual Fundraising Concert. The performance was stellar. Ted Moore, the Musical Director, Brad Brennan, Associate Director of Student Musical Activities together the Carol Suveda, Head of the Fundraising committee were pleased with the community response. It was clear that the community was greatly pleased with the students performance. The fundraiser could not have been as successful without the strong support of Linda Marquardt, mother of Megan Marquardt. Megan dazzled audiences with her stellar performance. Members of the audience who had not experienced a UC Jazz Ensembles show expressed their astonishment. They applauded the performances, the flawless timing and the amazing solo performances, and the creative interplay between the instruments. Enjoy the performance! Eddie Lankford Productions filmed a large part of it for your enjoyment. We hope that you will agree with the UC Jazz Club members that this is a worthwhile music program that provides these committed and talented students a chance to deepen their talent. Full Article

For Immediate Release June 6, 2006

“Please join the UC Jazz Club to assist with the Emergency Fundraising Effort for the UC Jazz Ensembles at UC Berkeley”

Rectangular Callout: 'UC Jazz on the UC Berkeley campus is vital. I would have never chosen to attend UC Berkeley if UC Jazz did not exist. Our organization is the only jazz outlet on campus for students like me who necessitate a jazz community in conjunction with their studies. -- Amy Shen FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:  UC Jazz Ensemble recently lost significant funding due to changes in management among one of its major sponsors.  US Jazz Ensemble is looking to immediately replace $25,000 to ensure the continuation of its current programs and to maintain current staff levels. We encourage everyone who loves music to support this student organization.  Learn more about this impressive and accomplished UC Berkeley faculty by visiting http://ucjazz.berkeley.edu/ensembles/.

Rectangular Callout: 'What many people don't realize about UC Jazz is our unique ability to bring students together. Music-making is a powerful tool to unite people, and our musicians become good friends in very short order. It's wonderful to have a place to come and make music with your friends. Before long, UC Jazz starts to feel like home.' - Nicole Kenley UC Jazz Ensembles is dedicated to the performance, study, and promotion of jazz at UC Berkeley. UC Jazz is one of three groups, including the Cal Band and UC Choral Ensembles that comprise Student Musical Activities (SMA), a department within Cal Performances.  Started in 1966, UC Jazz became an official student organization in 1971. UC Jazz consists of seven small combos and one big band. The small combos range in experience from beginning to advanced, and includes a vocal ensemble.  In the past, groups from UC Jazz have given free performances and clinics, bringing live music to public schools in the Bay Area.  During the school year, some of the students perform once per months at number of different venues in the Bay Area.  We will announce the play dates starting the fall at www.riovida.net.

Rectangular Callout: 'UC Jazz was the one place where I had found a community at Cal that I felt I completely fit in. And so, ironically because I was going to transfer to a music school, it was UC Jazz that convinced me to stay at Berkeley. I stayed at Cal because of UC Jazz, and thanks to the friends, experiences, and music here, I have never regretted the decision a single bit.' -- Stephanie Shih The Director of UC Jazz is Ted Moore. Since graduating from the Eastman School of Music, Ted has pursued a career which has taken him to many parts of the world with many different artists.  He has performed with Stan Getz, Paul Winter, Marian McPartland, Eric Gale, Jack Wilkins, Gene Bertoncini, and Joey DeFrancesco.  He has played in Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, the Kennedy Center, the Cathedral of St. John in New York, Grace Cathedral in San Francisco and Suntory Hall in Tokyo.  UC Jazz also has a staff of six instructors who direct the ensembles, run clinics and master classes, and help shape the musical identity of the program.

For the year, UC Jazz Ensemble wishes to raise an additional $300,000 to help in remodeling the UC Jazz studios.  The newly formed UC Jazz Club will be comprised of donors and volunteers who have an avid interest in supporting and enjoying this growing program.  Several opportunities will be offered to expand and upgrade the program and its educational offerings.  The current resources of UC Jazz include studios and equipment, practice areas, a jazz library and recordings of live performances by its members.  The goal is to uphold and improve this student organization on the UC Berkeley campus which has enchanted the Bay Area and often the world since 1966.

Please contact Ted Moore at 510-642-5073 or tmoore@ucjazz.berkeley.edu  to learn about the program. UC Jazz Club members will receive a discount for the regular student performances, receive the upcoming, newly produced CDs, and get discounts of the UC Jazz Ensembles faculty fund-raising performances.

California–based cross-media interactive Company, RioVida Networks, and the Friends of the Mustang Rally, have come together to promote the Mustang Rally, an international effort to raise awareness of the need to save the wild Mustangs.

Edie Okamoto, President and CEO of RioVida Networks, says the Mustang Rally was created to host a fun and exciting community effort to save the Mustang. The Mustang Rally will supply help to non-profit organizations and Mustang sanctuaries, which provide a natural environment for those animals that can be saved from human irresponsibility.

We have produced a fashion collection for the Mustang enthusiast both male and female. RioVida Networks will donate 10% of all sales to this effort and invites all of you to become part of the Mustang Rally.

According to the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), a little more than 32,000 Mustangs are still roaming free on public land. Since more and more public land is being sold, the space for the Mustangs is getting smaller. Selling off a living part of American history is not right. Ten Day Journey added based on popular demand!

Summer 2006 -- Travel Back to the Renaissance in Tuscany – Update

In order to accommodate schedules of the many enthusiasts interested in this special learning holiday, Lewis & Clark Graduate School of Education and Counseling has added a second trip to Tuscany from June 18th until June 28th. Please note we have added some rooms and are now able to accommodate more three-week visitors as well.

Escape to Tuscany, Italy, at the Villa di Campriano, a notable working wine and olive producing estate, full of history, near Siena and Florence for an entertaining learning holiday. “Reading Boccaccio’s masterpiece, Decameron, will be enriched by the Tuscan setting where many aspects of medieval city and country life, both secular and religious, are still present,” stated Michaela (Micha) Grudin, professor emerita of English, medieval scholar, and director of the Decameron Tuscany Program. Weekday mornings will be spent at the Villa di Campriano reading and discussing the Decameron, while afternoon activities include conversational Italian, cooking lessons with the talented Italian Chef Luigi Ricci, and touring local sites.

Breakaway trips to the marvelous medieval towns of Siena, San Gimignano, Arezzo, Pienza, Montepulciano, Certaldo, and Florence, and other locales pertinent to Boccaccio’s Decameron will bring alive the activities and times of the townspeople of the Middle Ages and Renaissance. This Decameron seminar group will have many opportunities to view the extensive collections of extraordinary art throughout Tuscany, explore the world-renowned museums, enjoy conversation at cafés in settings reminiscent of Boccaccio’s afternoons with other early Renaissance humanists, stroll through the interesting shops, and leisurely amble the famous plazas and celebrated fountains of these ancient towns.

Decameron is a story staged around 1350 during the beginning of the Renaissance, known as the birth of the Modern Era. A group of young Florentines spend the summer in the Tuscan country side – just as our group will do. There they spend leisurely days entertaining each other with flirtatious stories, getting to know each other better while lounging under the hot Tuscan sun, devoting themselves to fine wine, great food and each other’s entertaining company. They go for walks, picnics, they swim in the local lakes and enjoying each other’s teasing and wittiness. The often amusing stories in the Decameron are very descriptive in a way that breathes life into these historic medieval neighborhoods.

Our Decameron travelers will enjoy a similar holiday also devoting themselves to great Italian food and wine, good company, the amusing and exciting stories of the Decameron, and excursions to many of the actual places described in the book. The group will enjoy Etruscan frescos, enjoyable strolls on the plazas, and visits to the many historical sites in the company of other intelligent and fun-loving adults. “These excursions will serve to illustrate the remarkable energy of early Italian humanism in every sphere of life, including town planning, governance, and architectural and especially artistic achievement,” said Grudin. The pricing ranges from $2500 to $6,000.

This immersion travel & literature holiday is hosted by the Lewis & Clark College’s Graduate School of Education in conjunction with the Siena Italian Studies Program; and guided by Micha Grudin, Ph.D., and Italian friend Lavinia Bracci. 3/28/2005, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Berlin -- RioVida Networks announces the launch of its first venture in Internet broadcasting, the RioVida Finance Channel. Professionals from the Television, Financial, Technology, and Marketing Industries have joined together to entertain and educate audiences about financial matters and how they affect modern life. Their interactive TV channel may be viewed on digital cable, broadband Internet, and hand-held devices, retrieved via video cell phones or forwarded via e-mail.

Broadcast Veteran Rick Okie wrote and directed the pilot episode of “$ELF WORTH” with host Ray Arata, a San Francisco Financial Consultant. The series of programs is supported by promotions created by RioVida's Alan Segal, former creative director at Saatchi, Saatchi and CKS. RioVida Networks' interactive non-linear approach to program creation allows for a fun, flexible, and completely new vision integrating content, promotions, and sponsors messages.

On the net-cast tech side, RioVida Networks takes advantage of the open architecture of Red Viaria Technologies to manage the media content internationally. Raffi Mezaduryan, the inventor and developer of the underlying artificial intelligence program states: “Rick Okie's creative talent as a writer, producer and innovator will build RioVida's interactive TV network into an international powerhouse. Our team of experts allows my technology to be demonstrated in the best light. That is why I chose to launch the technology via RioVida Networks.” Alan Segal, a forward-thinking agency creative director was among the first to embrace the web for his advertising clients, and is delighted to push the envelope with truly interactive television advertising. He states: “We live in the era of on-demand media. RioVida Studios is set up to turn this consumer demand into a benefit for our advertising sponsors.”

Ray Arata leapt at the opportunity to inaugurate RioVida's Finance Channel. With changes in the Social Security Program around the corner, everyone needs to learn new investment and money management strategies that are congruent with their personal life goals. “I want to reach as many people as possible with this important message,” he says. “Everyone can live a balanced life if they use the proper strategies. RioVida Finance Channel exists to bring new financial tools and concepts into people's offices, homes and hands.” RioVida's financial sponsors and corporate customers are now able to educate their audiences about complex subjects in easy to understand step-by-step formats, in the language of their choice.

RioVida Networks consists of three divisions, RioVida Studios – an interactive TV production house, RioVida Networks – interactive TV channels that provide on-demand interactive TV programs on a wide range of subjects, including Finance, Outdoor/Environment, Home, and “Multi-Kulti” (Multicultural); and RioVida International – an international marketing and media consultancy firm.
