Wild Mustangs are one of the most fascinating species on the North American continent. They are living symbols of freedom. They cause us to dream of open lands and times long past. As Federal lands are encroached upon further and further, the pressures of development are depriving these animals of the very freedom they stand for, and for many even their right for survival.
The wild Mustangs are now facing this dire situation. Republican Senator Conrad Burns of Montana introduced
a one-page rider to the Federal Appropriations
Bill HR4848, changing an important federal regulation, the Wild Free-Roaming Horse Act, that has been in place
since 1971. This bill was signed into law
in early December 2004. It allows the once federally-protected wild horses and
burros to be sold by the Bureau of Land Management. The captured animals now can be sold if they are
either over ten years old, or have failed to be adopted after three attempts. Most of these unfortunate animals end up being purchased for slaughter.
Our goal is to rally support for the wild Mustangs. You are invited to help to ensure
the survival of this important part of our national heritage. Join the Mustang Rally, which is an international
effort focused on creating awareness about Wild Mustangs conservation.
The Mustang Rally offers a wide variety of opportunities for everyone to get
involved. Join us in this important cause, and see how you can help
to preserve the Mustangs, which Congress once declared "...living
symbols of the historic and pioneer spirit of the West."
